Definition
The structured expression of what a consumer wants, in their own terms.
Purpose
Gives a consumer a way to state a need precisely enough for a seller to respond to it directly, without a search step in between.
In Practice
A shopper tells their agent: "I need running shoes for a first marathon, on a tight budget." That sentence is the signal.
